Welcome to the Colchester Town Watch web pages.
We introduce ourselves to you primarily as proudly serving as the civic bodyguard to the Mayor of Colchester, as and when he or she require our services.
The Watch also turn out for major civic or social occasions, as well as for other events which promote Colchester, the Oldest Recorded Town in Britain. We are unique in Britain, with no other town or city mayor having such support as this.
Our livery is based on the Elizabethan period circa 1595 and concentrates on the Colchester borough arms (as depicted by our shield shown) colours of a jacket in red and knee breeches in green, woollen hose, leather shoes, breast and back plate armour in steel and brass, steel comb morion helmets. Swords, rapiers, daggers, pouches for baccy or ale money, are all optional. For ease of duty, we use the pole arm known as a partisan, although twelve foot pikes are also used on certain occasions.
The Watch is also available for hire for private or commercial functions; for weddings, charity events, guard of honour, etc. We would make your day, a special day to remember!
If you are interested in joining the Town Watch or just becoming a sponsor or a patron, please send us an email or ring us and we will send you the relevant forms.
We meet once a month, weather permitting, muster at 11am, on Sundays, dates to be advised. Gentlemen, Ladies and families welcome, no experience necessary, but must have a good sense of humour, loyal to all, an interest in history and enjoy having fun.
